Okay, I'm not really Al Frankin. I'm actually Paul Shestople, a graduate student in the Astronomy and Physics Department at San Francisco State University.
My scientific interests tend towards instrumentation, although I have A.B. degrees in physics and astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley. My interests in instrumentation stem from research that I did at UCB, designing a hard x-ray detector. Ask me about it. I'll tell you more then you want to hear about it.
I'm also interested in educating k-12 students about science. I work with the Pomo Band of Indians at Point Arena. I have also designed and written several web pages for middle school education.
This semester I'm setting up an Oxford Dilution Refridgerator and investigating photolithographic techniques for cosmological and commercial applications. These keep me extremely busy, but when I can I still try to find time to do other stuff. Watching "The Simpsons" and "Futurama" is high on my list, but fencing (with sharp pointy pieces of metal, as opposed to wooden slats) is also up there, as well as motorcycling. Recently I've really been into riding my mountain bike (check out these maker's of fine stainless steel bikes, Nac ). Like most geeks, I also love to read.
I'm married; my wife Mary is an ER nurse at an Oakland Hospital. We have three cats and a dog.
