PAC/SPS Meeting 12 November 2003
Hey all! Another wonderfully successful and stomach filling meeting!

A friendly and warm introduction from our President Nate Burd. And a hearty congratulations to our GRE test takers!

*There is an h-bar want-list posted just to the left of the door to 115 TH for you to post all your munching pleasures. Ryn and Leah will try to go on a food run soon!

*Yucky-icky policey-type stuff:

  • Fridge: there has been a fair amount of input to the fridge in the PAC room, and not too much output. Remember: put your name and date on your food before using the fridge! Please don't use the PAC shelf (top shelf, labelled "PAC shelf") for your personal items. Any food found without a name or date will be thrown away!
  • Please keep the PAC room locked! We got a notice from the campus police warning us to lock our room or risk getting some of our stuff stolen :( So please, if you have a key, make sure you lock it when you leave!
  • Clean-yo-crap! Janitors will not and do not come into the PAC room to clean. Thus it keeps its illustrious shine due to our elbow-grease. Chip in some grease today!
  • The recycling bin is for cans/bottles only. Please recycle your paper waste down the hall in TH 123 (the computer lab). We (Ryn) will try to get a paper recycling bin for your convenience.
  • Supplies have been disappearing: ferro fluid, books, even pens and office type supplies. Feel free to use whatever is in the PAC room, in the PAC room. If you leave the PAC room, leave all supplies behind.

Treasurer Dennis reports that we have $11,173.63. Approx. $8,000 will be set aside for lab manuals for next semester. We are also looking into getting a new computer/printer (ooooooh). And we have many fun events coming up this semester and next (see "Events" section below).

Events:

  • UCSC's Center for Adaptive Optics wants to give us a talk (probably next semester)
  • Debra Fischer wants to take us to LIC, (also likely to be next semester)
  • Chess Tournament: scheduled for the first week after THanksgiving. Sign up on the sheet on the blackboard.
  • Any ideas? Contact our events coordinators Louise Riofiro and Cara Henson.
  • PARTY! Every winter, Dr. Bland has a party at his house in the city. Be prepared for microwaved pickles, cd's, and freezing things with liquid nitrogen. Fun stuff! Details will come when they are decided upon.
  • We would like to have a weekly student talk event. This is designed to be a place where we can get together and share our research at a level everyone can understand! So, if you're doing research (Marcus, Cara, Louise, Michael, Dennis, etc) think about how you'd like to share and inform your colleagues.
  • Barbara Neuhauser would like to hold talks about modern physics. It's open for anyone to listen to, but is especially for her current modern physics students. The talks will be held the next two Mondays (17th and 24th) at 2:30pm in 434 TH.

Newsletter: We are trying to get a Newsletter out. So if you're doing research (here or anywhere) and want to share with others, write up a brief blurb about your work and give it to Nate Burd.

Graduating this semester? We'd like to help you celebrate! Let us know so we can help you leave SFSU with style!

We encourage you to apply to APS (American Physical Society) today! Members get many benefits. For more information contact Louise Riofiro or check them out for yourself at http://aps.org

Louise looked into getting a window in the PAC room--it's not happening. But maybe we can get a pretty poster of something outdoorsy so we think we're looking outside. Send suggestions or comments to Louise.

Note, we have a budget for getting media stuff for the physics department. We're getting the Nova special with Brian Greene (string theory). I think we take suggestions for more things.

Opportunity for 2nd-12th grade teachers to be: Johns Hopkins U. has a summer internship program. It counts for all hours that the credentialling program requires. You'll get $1800 + room and board.

Volunteer to mentor in your community today! If you don't know how or where to begin, check the cork board to the left of the door to TH 115 as you walk in; there are numerous opportunities available to you to give something back to your community!

Add your name to the PAC contacts box that is kept on the desk near the computer. That way we can keep tabs on you far after you graduate. Remember, big brother is watching!

We're also looking for volunteers to run the Planetarium shows next semester on the 4th floor to TH. You'll be trained, and the hours are flexible. Contact Michel at Michel@sfsu.edu.

Okay, here's me signing out.
