Texts: Conceptual Physics, 8th Edition, by Paul Hewitt
Practicing Physics, 8th Edition, by Paul Hewitt

Welcome to Conceptual Physics!

The aim of the course is to open your eyes to the physics that surrounds you. Learning physics is a lot of fun but it is also challenging. You will have a more enjoyable time in this class if you read the assigned chapters BEFORE comi ng to class and working through the Review Questions at the end of the chapter. Focus on the concepts in the summary section at the end of each chapter and in the schedule below. HINT: Pay special attention to things in bold.

Homework

Homework assignments are given for each chapter from the Practicing Physics Workbook. All worksheets for a week are due at the end of class on Thursday.

Staple them all together BEFORE you turn them in. You may want to make photocopies of them for yourself. Solutions will be posted in the Physics 101 glass case by the elevators on the first floor of Thornton Hall. The solutions will remain up for only a few weeks so be sure to go and check your work before its too late!

Quizes& Exams

There will be a quiz every Tuesday at the beginning of class. It will cover the reading due for that day plus past home works. There will be one midterm and a final exam. Grades will be based on the following (approximately):

* homework: 15%

* quiz': 25%

* midterm: 25%

* final exam: 35%

Final Grades are based on a straight percent:

A: > 90%; B: 89-80%; C: 79-60%; D: <59%

There will be NO make-ups and NO dropped scores. There will be some extra credit assignments offered which should cover unavoidable absences.

We will try to stick to the schedule but it is not cast in stone. DO NOT GET BEHIND!
This class is going to move at light speed! So keep up! Ask questions! Work hard! Have fun! Yum! Yum! J
