Items of Interest:Hotels in the 46th Ave./Sloat Blvd. area are campus accessible taking the 18 Bus which runs every 20 minutes. Downtown hotels are not on the list, however, there are dozens, some of them quite expensive. To reach campus from downtown attendees can take the "M" Muni car to SFSU. The airport area also offers a few nice hotels but you'll need a rental car to reach campus from there. Additionally, the University has a great web site for directions to campus and parking information: http://www.sfsu.edu/~parking/text/tocampus.html Shuttles from the Airport to campus run $12 to $15. Taxi's are about 2 times that. Attendees driving from the Airport should go North on 101 to 380 to 280 North. Once north on 280 the attendee should follow the signs for 19th Ave. and SFSU. As the Freeway ends, attendees should remain to the right lanes of traffic and drive onto Junipero Serra Blvd. From Junipero Serra, they should turn left on Holloway Avenue, right onto Font Blvd., right onto Lake Merced Blvd., and then right onto South State Drive. The University parking structure is on South State Drive (see the University map for clarification).
There is also a web site with a map of the campus at: http://www.sfsu.edu/faq/map98.gif
The University web site is: http://www.sfsu.edu
Another web site good for all sorts of information is: http://www.sfvisitor.org
Dining & Shopping Just north of campus is Stonestown Galleria, the closest shopping and restaurant area that will be open during the conference. Stonestown opens at 10 AM and closes at 10 PM on Friday and Saturday nights and 7PM on Sunday nights. They have a food court, Chevy's and Olive Garden. A few blocks further north is Ocean Avenue where there are a few different restaurants; Chinese, Café Style, Thai, etc. About one mile north of campus is a wonderful neighborhood known as West Portal. West Portal offers over 20 different restaurants, shopping, antique stores, a movie theatre and much more. West Portal is easily accessible from campus by taking the "M" Muni car inbound (toward Downtown).
Weather in San Francisco can vary drastically from day to day. Normal weather conditions in October are warm for SF, 70 - 80 degrees (occasionally higher at this time of the year). However, our warm weather can turn cold, overcast and windy in just an hour or so because we are very close to the ocean. Attendees should plan to bring layers. They won't need snow parkas but they will need a jacket and/or good sweater. Having shorts is not a bad idea either.
