Final Exam Review Sheet

 

The exam will take place in Science 201 on Friday, December 21 from 10:45 AM – 1:15 PM.  It will be closed book and closed notes.  Any equations or numerical constants needed will be provided on the test.  You may bring a calculator that is not part of a cell phone. 

 

You will need to bring a Scantron form 882-E (teal green) 

 

Topics to be covered: (roughly 1/3 of questions will be from MT 1 & 2, roughly 2/3 from later chapters)

 

From Midterm 1: Celestial sphere model, Seasons, moon phases, eclipses, KeplerÕs laws of planetary motion, NewtonÕs law of gravity, geocentric and heliocentric models of the solar system

 

From Midterm 2: Frequency & energy of photons/light, electromagnetic spectrum, WeinÕs Law, spectral types of stars, life cycles of stars (trace stars from formation, to main sequence, to end of life cycle based on initial mass, see CH 9-10), Doppler effect, absolute vs. apparent magnitude, fusion in the Sun

 

Chapter 11: Pulsars, lighthouse model of pulsars, relation of pulsars to neutron stars, black holes, escape velocity, event horizon, formation of black holes, evidence for black holes

 

Chapter 12: discovery of the Milky Way, parts of the Milky Way (bulge, halo, disk), approximate size & shape, star populations (population I and population II stars), Cepheid variable stars

 

Chapter 13: Types of galaxies (spiral, elliptical, irregular), Hubble Law, rotation curves, dark matter

 

Chapter 15: Universe (no edge or center), OblersÕs paradox, evidence for the Big Bang, expanding universe, Cosmic Microwave Background, Age of the Universe, Fate of the Universe, critical density, Geometry of the universe (closed, open or flat)

 

Section 16.4: Detection methods & properties of extrasolar planets

 

Chapters 17-18: characteristics of terrestrial planets, characteristics of jovian planets, compare & contrast terrestrial and jovian planets, greenhouse effect, new definition of a planet, dwarf planets

 

Not on test: Chapter 14, Sections 16.1-16.3, Chapter 19, Chapter 20, and any other topics that were also not covered on the Midterms.
