Current ResearchSummary:
We have installed an underwater current meter in the delta region of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers in California. This instrument uses cross-correlation of phase-modulated signals to determine sound propagation delays and so to measure the speed of sound in the water. Measurements in two directions permit the determination of the current speed and also provide information on temperature and salinity. Measurements of this type at several points in the interconnecting channels of the Delta will eventually be used by the USGS to determine the net discharge of fresh water into the San Francisco Bay.
